Free Winter Break Breakfast & Lunch Program Begins in 2018

For the first time, Fayetteville Public Schools Child Nutrition will offer free breakfast and lunch during the winter holiday break. Meals will be served at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club on various dates in December and January. Similar to the school district’s summer meal program, the nutritious breakfasts and lunches are free to anyone age 18 or younger, according to Ally Mrachek, Director of Child Nutrition for Fayetteville Public Schools.

The Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club is located at 560 Rupple Rd in Fayetteville and will serve free breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and free lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The service dates will be:

December 2018: 20, 21, 27 and 28
January 2019: 2, 3, and 4.

Meals will be available to members and non-members of the Boys & Girls Club.

“I am very pleased to see this extension of our Child Nutrition program to help our students during the winter break,” said Dr. John L Colbert, Superintendent of Schools. “We know that some of our students don’t always have access to healthy meals during the break, and we hope this meets that need and helps them to eat more nutritious meals.”

“The interest and idea came from our district’s student services team, said Mrachek. “Our social workers saw a need, and we were willing to create a program to meet that need. We have a long-standing partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, serving their student members after school and during the summer. It seemed like a good location for our new winter program to have a big impact, since many students will attend their programming over break, and the location is well known in the community. It’s also on a bus route to reduce any transportation barriers.”

The winter meal program is estimated to feed nearly 200 children breakfast and lunch each day of operation.
